When slurry has that terrible, eye-burning, don’t-leave-your-clothes-out-on-the-clothesline smell, it is telling us that the animal wastes have been stored in an environment lacking in oxygen and full of pathogenic micro-organisms. These "nasty" micro-organisms break down the fecal matter in a non-beneficial manner, unlinking the fertilizing elements and encouraging their evaporation into the air and their seeping through the soil and off into the watershed.
